**Is Feeling Compassion the Same as Living It?**

We can be deeply moved by another person’s suffering and still leave their world exactly as we found it.

The feeling may be sincere. Yet sincerity leaves a question unanswered: where does our attention go next? Towards the person who needs us, or towards what their suffering has stirred within us?

This question reaches into the heart of spiritual practice and psychological work. We learn to understand our emotions, recognise our patterns and explore our inner lives. But at what point does understanding ourselves help us participate more fully in life—and at what point does it become a place to remain?

Perhaps we are waiting to become sufficiently healed, clear or peaceful before we can offer ourselves to the world. What if some of that understanding can only emerge through the relationships and responsibilities we keep postponing?

Action, too, deserves examination. Helping can express care, but it can also serve our need to feel useful, necessary or good. How do we remain attentive to another person’s needs, including their freedom to refuse what we offer?

Drawing on counselling approaches and spiritual traditions of service, this illustrated essay explores the distance between being touched by life and becoming more available to it.

What becomes of compassion once the feeling has passed?
