The Mind That Sees Another Way

On ADHD, the Discovery of Personal Strengths, and the Conditions That Allow Us to Flourish

We often become familiar with our limitations long before we learn to recognise our strengths.

For someone living with ADHD, years of reminders, corrections, and unmet expectations can gradually shape not only how they understand their difficulties, but how they understand themselves.

Yet our abilities do not develop independently of the world around us. The same person may struggle in one environment and discover unexpected confidence and competence in another.

How much of what we believe about ourselves reflects our actual capacities? And how much has been shaped by the circumstances in which those capacities were expected to emerge?

This essay explores the relationship between ADHD, personal strengths, self-perception, and the environments that influence our development.

Not to suggest that every difficulty conceals an extraordinary gift, but to consider something more fundamental: how we might come to know ourselves more fully when our limitations are no longer the only part of our experience receiving attention.
